OSCURIDAD

Oscuridad, Walking Through the Darkness is meant to be a 360 installation that can also be viewed in Virtual Reality. This project was inspired while I was filming a group of Parsons Graduate Lighting Design and Architect Students visiting communities in Puerto Rico living without electricity due to the destruction of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

Problem

This project is broken down into two parts. First, my work as their videographer and documenter, and secondly as my thesis project of an abstract 3D environment that displays a neighborhood living in darkness.

In January of 2018, I was part of a group of lighting design students called Lighting in Action who visited communities in Puerto Rico still living without electricity. These students wanted to document these living conditions and collaborate with community leaders to see how Parsons students could get more involved in the recovery and rebuilding of these Puerto Rican neighborhoods.

After receiving funding through our school, we were able to travel to Puerto Rico for five days to visit four different communities.

  1. San Juan, Puerto Rico (Capital)

  2. University de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico

  3. Nonprofit Organization, Taller Salud, Loiza, Puerto Rico

  4. Proyecto ENLACE del Caño de Martín Peña, Martín Peña Puerto Rico

Team and Website

One of of our team members, Marien Velez is a native of Puerto Rico and helped us organize our itinerary. The goal of this first part of the project was to visit Puerto Rico to understand the lighting conditions and new rhythm of life in these communities. Our ultimate object is to return to these communities to be guided by these community leaders on where they may need extra hands to rebuild in various forms of architectural sketches, lighting reassembly, or community outreach.
